Press brake tonnage calculator

Find out how many tonnes of press brake your part needs: choose the metal, enter the thickness and bending length, and get the required force and the suggested machine size.

Calculator

1. Metal type
2. The part
3. Bottom die opening (V)

8 times the thickness is common for mild steel. A smaller opening needs more force; a larger one needs less force but gives a wider radius.

Approximate force required

74.5 tonnes

731.3 kN

Suggested machine (with 20% margin)
89.4 tonnes or more
Force per metre
243.8 kN
Die opening
24 mm
Minimum flange length
about 16.8 mm
Inner radius
about 3.8 mm

An air bending estimate using the common workshop rule. The actual force depends on the metal, the tooling and the bending method, so send us your part and we will calculate it precisely.

Send the result and ask for a machine recommendation

Questions about bending force

The common air bending rule for mild steel: force per metre in kN ≈ 650 × thickness² ÷ die opening, then multiplied by the bending length in metres. Stainless needs about 1.5 times as much, and aluminium about half.
